Criteria we used, in order: job fit, who operates it after launch, whether readers get a product they do not configure, where checkout lives, whether citations and refusal are the offer, time-to-live, and a dated public price. Best free tool: NotebookLM
If the question is “can I talk to this manuscript,” Google’s notebook — now also branded Gemini Notebook — wins on price and grounding. You configure it. Best self-serve Digital Mind: Delphi

A thin “best Chatbase alternatives” list. A Custom GPT with your PDF attached. ElevenLabs as if it were a book-bot OS. Any page that ranks tools with invented stars. Any price we could not read on a first-party page the same day — Qaori’s regional amounts and SiteGPT’s live grid are the current examples; we say so on those comparisons instead of guessing.
A 12-month picture, not a sticker

What is the best AI for authors in 2026?
There is not one best tool. For your own research, NotebookLM (Google also calls it Gemini Notebook) is the honest default and is often free. For a Digital Mind you will configure yourself, Delphi is the category product. For a branded, cited, monetized bot on your site that someone else builds, Scriptus is the engagement. Mixing those jobs into one ranked list is how most roundups go wrong.
Is this page also for coaches, or only authors?
Both. Scriptus’s offer is the same for authors, coaches, consultants, and course creators who already have a body of work. We did not create a separate /best/ai-for-coaches URL because the product and the price do not change. Coachvox and Rocky.ai tilt more toward coaches; Delphi and NotebookLM do not care which label you use.
Why isn’t ChatGPT or a Custom GPT on this list as the winner?
A Custom GPT is a prompt with files attached. It is a fine personal tool. It is not a branded site product with entitlements, durable reader history, or checkout on your rail. If that is all you need, you do not need anyone on this page except NotebookLM or ChatGPT.
Should I buy Scriptus if I only want to chat with my PDF?
