Scriptus vs Vapi

A phone runtime you assemble, or a knowledge product you publish

Vapi is a voice-agent platform for teams who want to build calling agents: usage-based minutes, bring-your-own models, concurrency lines, enterprise add-ons. That is a real job. It is not the Scriptus job. If the product you want is a phone agent, Vapi is the more honest tool. If the product you want is your book working on your website, a voice API is the long way around.

Choose Scriptus if

You want a branded, cited knowledge product on your site, with entitlements and reader billing, built for you. Voice, if you use it, is optional in-chat speech — not a contact center.

Choose Vapi if

You are building voice agents as software. You want $0.05/minute platform cost, model spend passed through (or your own keys), 10 concurrent lines to start, and a path to HIPAA or zero-data-retention add-ons. You will operate the stack.

What you pay $5,000 setup + $500/month. No per-minute operator meter. No revenue share. Scale is an annual contract. From vapi.ai/pricing, 4 September 2026.

Where Vapi is stronger

Telephony as a first-class API. Transparent per-minute platform fee. Bring-your-own keys. Concurrency you can buy. If phone is the job, Vapi (or Retell) wins. Scriptus will not grow a CCaaS to chase that buyer.

Where Scriptus is stronger

Purpose-built web knowledge product. No minute meter for the operator engagement. Identity and entitlements included. Citations as the offer. The rebuild off a general kit happened so those layers could be owned — a voice API has the same gap if you needed a book bot.

Pricing, without theater

Vapi’s $0.05/minute is not the cost of a book bot. Transport, STT, LLM, and TTS sit on top unless you bring keys. Scriptus’s $5,000 + $500 is a different object: a finished site product, not a minute.

We will not claim Vapi is expensive. For a team shipping calls, usage pricing can be the right meter. For an author, it is the wrong meter.

Switching

There is no import of a Vapi assistant into Scriptus. We train on your source material. Keep the phone agent if phone is still a job — Scriptus does not replace a contact-center runtime.

Verdict

Choose Vapi if you are building voice agents. Choose Scriptus if you already have the knowledge and want it working on your site. Choose Retell or Synthflow if you want a different phone vendor in the same family. If you only need anonymous Q&A over a PDF, use NotebookLM.

Questions people actually ask

Is Scriptus a Vapi alternative?

Only if you were using Vapi to approximate a site-based knowledge product. For phone agents, Vapi is the category product and Scriptus is the wrong tool.

You already use ElevenLabs. Why not Vapi?

ElevenLabs is a voice vendor we use for TTS in chat. Vapi is an agent runtime. They are not the same layer. We are not replacing ElevenLabs with a peer OS comparison.

Does Scriptus take a cut of reader subscriptions?

No. Subscriber revenue is yours.

Can Vapi do a book bot if I build it?

You can point a voice agent at documents. You still have to build identity, entitlements, a site embed, and commerce. That is the project Scriptus is for.
